7 Surprising Benefits of Lavender Bath Salts + Recipe

I love soaking in a bath salt and thinking of nothing but the luxurious smell, warm water, and having a moment where I can drift off into peaceful thoughts. Nothing is better on a stressful day or sick day.

But, bath salts have more benefits than you may realize. When I used them, I knew they made me feel good but I didn’t know why exactly. As it turns out, there are several reasons that’ll make you want to add them to your pamper routines.

All Epsom salts contain magnesium and sulfate, but there are different ways in which brands manufacture and package their salts, as well as different grades of salts.

Credo Beauty has a gluten-free, vegan bath salt that’s infused with CBD. I also love their Calm Couple Care Package Duo that comes with a lavender-infused bath salt and balm, which is made from plant-based butter varieties and oils….so it will work also to moisturize and soothe your skin.

When I need a pick me up or a day to pamper myself, bath salts are my go-to answer.

BATH SALT INGREDIENTS FOR MOISTURIZED SKIN

Below are a few popular ingredients you can use in your own DIY bath salt recipe. Once you have the base (Epsom salt and Himalayan salt), you can use different essential oils and/or herbs to your liking and create your own scent. Or, try it out with the lavender first and then experiment with other scents. Here are a few benefits of bath salts and their ingredients.

Light a candle, and enjoy!

EPSOM SALT

white salt

Epsom salt is also known as magnesium sulfate and is an essential ingredient in any bath salt recipe. It’s a chemical compound that is full of magnesium, sulfur, and oxygen….which helps to get rid of any toxins in your body and reduce swelling, stiffness, and pain.

This salt originates from the town of Epsom in Surrey, England, and even though its appearance is similar to traditional table salt, it’s actually very different in that you can’t eat it because it tastes bitter and unpleasant.

HIMALAYAN SALT

Sea salt for bathing

Himalayan salt has certain minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium as well. If you’re acne-prone, you’ll want to add it to your bath salt. It can treat hard-to-reach areas where breakouts occur, like your back or shoulders.

Unlike Epsom salt, Himalayan salt can be used in cooking and to preserve food. It’s said to be one of the purest salts that exist and is considered exotic.

LAVENDER

Essential oil and lavender flowers

Lavender essential oil is one of the most luxurious oils found in nature. Not only does it calm, de-stress, and relax you, it also gets you cleaner when mixed in a bath. Because of its gentle scent, it’ll put you in a better mood and in a serene state of mind. If you often have stressful days, lavender is a must-have.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BATH SALTS?

 1. Magnesium

Magnesium is an extremely important nutrient that our bodies need to be the most healthy that we can be.

There are so many beneficial effects that this mineral has on your body – from muscle function to decreased migraines. It’s the primary reason why bath salts are so good for you.

2. Sleep-Aid and Stress Reduction

When the magnesium releases in combination with a hot bath, it promotes deep sleep and de-stresses you by helping your body produce melatonin (a hormone which makes you sleepy).

If you aren’t getting a restful night’s sleep, it may be because you have low magnesium levels, so bath salts may be able to help you sleep better, fight insomnia, and wake up well-rested, ready for the day.

3.  Natural Soreness and Pain Reducer

Your aches and pain will be soothed and lessened in a relaxing hot salt bath, especially if you have inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Also, because of the magnesium, your menstrual symptoms like cramps and back pain can be relieved….and anything that can help during that time of the month is a plus in my book!

4. Foot Health

If you’re an athletic person, you can soak your feet in the bath salt with warm water to heal infections and minimize foot odor.

5.  Mental Wellness

Bath salts can help elevate your mood by relieving stress, anxiety, and depression by increasing your happiness/relaxation hormone (serotonin).

6. Skin Soothing

Your skin will be detoxified by the minerals in bath salts and you’ll have thoroughly cleansed skin. Pollution, toxins, oil, dirt, and sweat will be drawn out that you have come in contact with throughout the day….leaving your skin soft and supple!

If you have bug bites, rashes, or feet calluses, bath salts can also help soothe those irritations.

7.  Constipation

If you have slow-moving digestion, the magnesium in bath salts may help you by bringing water into your colon, which in turn helps move waste down.

If you frequently have constipation, you may need to change your diet, but also Ritual Vitamins may help as well. It’s so important to make sure that your body is getting the right amount of supplements, even with a clean diet. These vitamins have magnesium which is not only good for constipation, but also muscle function, bone health, and heart health.
